Ride 1: Stellenbosch tour

Cycling camps in picturesque Stellenbosch are fast becoming the cyclists first choice for training during the European winters. It's only 1-2 hour time difference and flight time is less than 12 hours from Europe. Stellenbosch offers stellar training facilities, hilly terrain, and a Mediterranean climate. There is an extensive network of mountain biking trails and trail running routes, making it a unique playground to sports enthousiasts. And the best part it is accessible all year round.

The town itself has an incredible restaurant and coffee-shop scene, offering visitors an array of cuisines, wine shops, artisanal bakeries and coffee roasters, as well as a weekly night market with local and regional vendors.

The ride

The first ride of this camp we will start form Stellenbosch. From here we will go to Jonkershoek Nature Reserve. We will turn at the gate (no coffee allowed here!!), back towards Stellenbosch, cruise through town and continue towards Jordan Wine estate. We will literally be surrounded by beautiful vineyards. We continue towards Jordan Wine Estate, where we will have a short coffee stop. After the coffee we continue over the Bottelary hills, a short but steep climb and sorry 200m of easy gravel. Dont worry the stunning views will compensate for that! Going down on the other side we continue the loop all the way back to Stellenbosch.

We have some different distances for this ride, depending on the fitness level of the riders.

  • Stellenbosch - Jonkershoek - Jordan wine estate - Stellenbosch +/- 55 km (600m of elevation)
  • Stellenbosch - Jonkershoek - Jordan wine estate - Bottelary hills - Stellenbosch +/- 100 km (1100m of elevation)

Stellenbosch

Jonkershoek nature reserve is home to the majestic Jonkershoek Mountains and parts of the Jonkershoek valley.  The reserves lies about 7km from Stellenbosch, on the Jonkershoek valley road. The rugged Jonkershoek Mountains, which form part of the Boland Mountains, are ideal for hiking and mountain biking  enthusiasts. The Eerste, Berg, Lourens and Riviersonderend rivers all start high in these mountains, although only the Eerste River actually flows through the Jonkershoek valley. The area is also rich in animal and plant life, with over 1 100 plant species and a variety of small mammals, birds and reptiles. Hikers should be on the lookout for berg adders, puff adders, boomslang and Cape cobras.

Ride 2: False Bay

The coastal route of False bay is a magnificent scenic coastal ride between the windswept hamlet of Gordons Bay and the naval town of kleinmond, which nestles in the north-eastern crook of False Bay in the shadow of the Hottentots Hollands mountains. This beautiful, coastal drive stretches between the two towns over 50 km, hugging the wild turquoise Cape coastline all the way. If you like passes with lots of corners, then this one is for you, as it contains 90 bends, curves and corners of which four are in excess of 150 degrees. The road is in a beautiful condition and attracts tourists, locals and lots of cyclists.

The ride

We will start this ride at On the Go coffee stop at Gordons Bay. Gordons bay is about 30-45 minutes away from Stellenbosch. We often ride the part between Stellenbosch and Gordons bay (30 km), but the real magic starts after leaving Gordons bay on the Whale coast route. From Gordons Bay it is about 50 km to Kleinmond where we will have have a short coffee stop. The ride can be extended a bit (+/- 10 km) by cycling to the penguin colony of Betty's bay. This is a there and back ride, means we ride the same way back as there is no other road.

We have some different distances for this ride, depending on the fitness level of the riders.

  • Gordons Bay - Pringle Bay (and back) +/- 55 km (600m of elevation)
  • Gordons Bay - Betty's  (and back) +/- 70 km (700m of elevation)
  • Gordons bay - Kleinmond (and back) +/- 100 km (1000m of elevation)

Stony Rock (Betty's Bay) penguins colony

Bikes and penguins? Yes, located in the quaint coastal town of Betty's Bay in the Overberg, the Stony Point Nature Reserve is home to a unique colony of African Penguins. Stony Point offers the public the chance to see these wonderful flightless birds up close, via the boardwalk through the colony, which allows the public to observe the penguins go about their daily activities in their natural habitat, without disturbing or disrupting them.

Franschhoek pass

The lush meadows and vineyards of the Franschhoek Valley spread out beneath you as you traverse this masterfully engineered mountain pass. From this vantage point, you’re able to gaze out upon the oasis of greenery surrounded by mountains, wondering what the earliest settlers – whether San, Khoi or Huguenot – must have thought when they first stumbled upon this hidden piece of paradise.
Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve, which is accessed from the Franschhoek Mountain Pass. Here, you can hike one of the many trails that pass by flourishing fynbos fields and tranquil mountain streams (which are usually in full flow in winter), while offering spectacular views of the mountain and valley. Fun fact Franschhoek Pass was originally known as Olifantshoek (“Elephants Corner”). Believe it or not, the mighty giants once roamed this region, and would cross these very mountains at the change of seasons.

The ride

We start this ride from Stellenbosch. We will cruise to town towards the first climb of the day, Helshoogte. This is a scenic climb (4,5 km), passing the world famous wine estates of Graf Delaire and Tokara. From the top, we descent down towards Franschhoek, passing more famous vineyards like Boschendal and La Motte. After 30 km we cruise through Franschhoek town centre to the bottom of the Franschhoek pass. This is a 7 km climb to the top with stunning views. All you will see is more vineyards and mountains. For the fit cyclists there is the option to descend the pass over the windy windy road with its hairpin corners. Keep in mind...what goes down has to get up again. After a coffee stop in FH we ride the same route back to Stellenbosch with the option to detour a little bit to the Berg river dam site.

  • Elevation Franschhoek pass: 500 meters
  • Elevation halshoogte pass: 250 meters
  • Stellenbosch - Franschhoek  -  Stellenbosch 60 km (850m of climbing)
  • Stellenbosch - Franschhoek Pass top - Stellenbosch 80 km (1250 m of climbing)
  • Stellenbosch - over Franschhoek pass - Stellenbosch 105 km (1550 m of climbing)

Franschhoek

Once a quiet country retreat, the originally French settled village and region began experiencing a boom in the 1990s. The ideal summer weather, snowy peaks in winter and proximity to Cape Town have turned Franschhoek into one of South Africa's most sought after residential addresses. Franschhoek is notable for having some of the top restaurants in the country within its borders. This fact, together with the strong wine culture, and pristine natural and architectural beauty has made Franschhoek into what many describe as the "food and wine capital" of South Africa. This village hosted one of the top 50 restaurants in the world The Tasting Room.

Ride 4: Bains Kloof pass

The most famous pass built by Scottish engineer, Andrew Bain, snakes up the R301/3 above Wellington – and is certainly a worthy memorial to the masterpass builder for whom it is named. On a clear day, you can see the distant Table Mountain and charming Cape Winelands spread out below you.
Declared a National Monument in 1980, Bainskloof Pass lies within a nature heritage site, and is part of the Limietberg Nature Reserve.
Look out for  crystal-clear river streams, the indigenous fauna, which includes 182 bird species, otters, jackals, leopards, Cape honey badgers, various buck, and endangered frogs and fish. Completed in 1854, this is one of South Africa’s most picturesque and masterfully constructed passes and covers a distance of 30km, including some hair-raising turns, which make the drive even more of an eye opener.

The ride

For this ride we load the bikes up the car and drive to Windmill Wine estate  in Paarl or La Vita in Wellington (depending on the riders fitness). From here we ride towards Wellington, through town towards the bottom of Bainskloof pass. This is a 10 km very scenic ride to the top and....it's not as steep as the FH pass. Down on a long decent on the other side to Bergsig wine estate for a short stop. After the coffee stop, back up the pass. Shortest route back to Windmill will be 80 in total, but we have options to extend (or shorten) it with another 20km scenic loop or even a ride back all the way to Stellenbosch.

Wellington

Wellington is a town in the Western Cape Winelands. a 45 minute drive from Stellenbosch with a population of approximately 58,300. Wellington's economy is centred around agriculture such as wine, table grapes, deciduous fruit and a brandy industry. The town is situated at the foot of the Groenberg on the banks of the KrommeRivier (Dutch for Bend River) and forms the centre of the Cape Winelands with its picturesque environment and numerous wineries. The perfect climate in Wellington, supports the production of some exceptional "big red" varieties such as Shiraz, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Ride 5: Cape Peninsular

The exceptionally diverse and scenic Cape Peninsula coast route, this is why the Cape Town Cycle Tour is considered as one of the most beautiful rides of the world. Exceptionally diverse. Charmingly coastal. Distinctly Cape Town. The Mother City’s famed Peninsula is as varied as it is unique. Set on a dramatic landmass jutting into the Atlantic, the lively urban metropolis is surrounded by breath-taking natural beauty on all sides: grand Table Mountain, Lions Head, the magnificent Cape Floral Kingdom, thriving vineyards, stretches of dazzling beaches, the deep blue Atlantic, penguin colonies and ostrich farms.

The ride

Todays ride (our favorite cone) starts in Cape Town and goes over the famous Chapman’s peak, one of South Africa most beautiful mountain passes. The route along the slopes of the iconic Table mountain passing seaside suburbs of Clifton, Camps Bay, Hout Bay and a selection of postcard-perfect beaches. After a short photo stop at the top of Chapmans Peak we continue our ride on the other side to Noordhoek. Before we are going back we will have a coffee stop at "The Farm Village". From here we cycle back to our hotel, this will be the same route as the last part of the Cape Town Cycle Tour. Total distance is about 65 km but we can adjust the distance to your wishes, just keep in mind your race will be 2 days later!

Cape Town

Cape Town is a port city on South Africa’s southwest coast, on a peninsula beneath the imposing Table Mountain. Slowly rotating cable cars climb to the mountain’s flat top, from which there are sweeping views of the city, the busy harbor and boats heading for Robben Island, the notorious prison that once held Nelson Mandela, which is now a living museum
